Consider purchasing body piercing jewelry made out of stainless steel. Stainless steel is usually relatively inexpensive and considered to be safe for use on new piercings. It is generally recommended that the stainless steel be of "implant grade," which indicates that it is approved by the US government for safe use and less likely to produce an allergic reaction. The grade should be listed somewhere on the package or price tag of the jewelry you purchase, so be sure to check for it before buying anything.
